Personal, Social & Emotional Development

PSED

MAKING RELATIONSHIPS, SELF-CONFIDENCE, & MANAGING BEHAVIOUR

At Apple Tree we actively nurture children's personal, social and emotional growth, helping them to flourish into confident, social learners. They form a positive sense of themselves and others as they learn how to manage their feelings and develop effective learning behaviours. During these early years, children learn how to make and retain friendships. We sensitively support them to learn this essential skill and it is at this time they may form friendships that last a lifetime.

Laying Foundations for Life

Language

LISTENING & ATTENTION, UNDERSTANDING, SPEAKING

Children's communication skills are earnestly promoted throughout the entire day. Traditional tales and contemporary stories with repeated phrases, a range of nursery rhymes and language activities provide children great opportunities to develop in this crucial area. As they grow, children learn how to listen attentively and maintain attention and concentration on a variety of engaging and exciting topics. Practitioners are trained to identify difficulties in communication and language, supporting parents to ensure continual progress.

Physical Development

Physical

MOVING & HANDLING, HEALTH & SELF-CARE

The continuous development of children's gross and fine motor skills forms a fundamental part of our day. Research has clearly shown that children's physical development is closely linked to cognitive processes. At Apple Tree, children will have access to outdoor learning everyday. They will develop physical control and co-ordination and practice physical skills such as running, hopping, skipping, climbing and pedaling cycles.

Specific Areas Of Learning

Literacy

READING & WRITING

We aim to instill a love for books by bringing books to life during our daily story times. Each child has their very own book bag; once a week they choose a book from our 'library' to take home and share with the family. Integrated and discreet daily phonics sessions enables Apple Tree children to make rapid progress in reading. The development of children's fine motor skills is actively promoted through our Montessori Practical Life Activities. When they are ready, children learn how to form letters correctly, write their names and short words.

Specific Areas Of Learning

Maths

NUMBERS  SHAPE, SPACE & MEASURE

By means of practical experience, children become familiar with sorting, matching, ordering, sequencing and counting activities. They develop an awareness of the relationship between numbers and amounts and know that numbers can be 'added together' and 'taken away'. Children use their developing understanding to solve practical problems, learn and use the vocabulary of mathematics, identifying objects by shape, position, size, volume, weight, and number.

Understanding the World

The World

PEOPLE & COMMUNITIES, THE WORLD, TECHNOLOGY

Apple Tree celebrates diversity. Children learn to respect and value their culture and those of others. In order to make sense of their world, children safely explore and investigate a range of natural and manufactured materials. They learn to observe and investigate the features of nature, recognising differences, patterns and similarities. Along with other IT resources, children are given access to a computer. They learn that information can be retrived from a computer and use ICT hardware to interact with age appropriate software.

Exploring arts and design

Arts & Design

EXPLORING MEDIA AND MATERIALS, BEING IMAGINATIVE

Children are encouraged to use a wide range of resources to express their own ideas and feelings. They construct their individual responses in two and three dimensions through art, music, movement, imaginative play and technology. Art equipment, such as paint, glue, crayons, pencils, and play dough, in addition to natural and recyclable resources, provide for open ended creative play and exploration. Children learn about colour, shape and texture, and develop their skills in painting, drawing, making collages and sculptures.

Founded in 2004, Apple Tree Nursery and Montessori is a family run establishment where children come first. Born in our family home, we pride ourselves in providing children with a ‘home from home’ experience.
